Factors Effecting height and How to Grow Taller

Many factors including nutrition, genes, and overall health determine the ultimate height of a person. From infancy to age 2, there is initially rapid growth of child’s height then it slows down. There is almost about 2½ inches steady growth per year from age 2 to puberty. As one enters puberty, a growth spurt of 3 to 5 inches in a year happens commonly. Even in healthy adults, between the ages of 40-50, height actually may begin to decline.

The length of the longest bones, such as the femur (in the upper leg), tibia and fibula (in the lower leg) is major determinant of height. The long bones have growth plates. Growth plates are areas towards the ends that have a space allowing elongation. The growth plates close, generally by age 21-22 or so, and the bones cannot grow any longer.

Many of hormones are involved with normal development and ultimate height, including the growth spurt that occurs around the time of puberty. Among these hormones there are thyroid hormone, growth hormone, cortisol and the sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone). The hands and feet enlarge before the long bones, during pubertal growth spurt. Increase in shoe size is the first indication that rapid growth is about to begin.

Gender has a significant effect on height. In girls, the growth spurt around the time of puberty occurs two years earlier as compared to boys. But once it begins boys tend to grow taller. Height difference between adult men and women is about 5 inches is due to the greater growth of boys during the adolescent growth spurt and the greater height achieved prior to that growth spurt, even though girls tend to start their growth spurt sooner
Beyond the fact that genes determine gender, they play important role in determining height. With good nutrition, good health and under the best circumstances it is the genes that have the biggest effect on ultimate height.
